This cashmere fabric is the finest in the world. A Baby pashmina or Sha-Pashmina is the first wool and considered as the finest but available in very limited quantity. This selective wool is called as Sha- Pashmina (Kings of pashmina). The ultrafine cashmere is spun by Hand in Budgam district of Kashmir by hand charkha. There are more than 50 women here, who hand spin the pashmina using the old technique of hand charka. This complete process is governed by Nusrat Fatima who takes account of the complete process. She is among the best spinners of this town. This is one of the finest 100% Handmade Kashmir pashmina and a limited edition.

The cashmere of this piece was sourced in the August 2016 from Ladakh, which then came to Kashmir and the piece was completed in May 2017

The cashmere comes from Changthang in Ladakh, Northern India, which is located some 5000 metres above sea level. It is so cold and harsh that the Capra Hircus goats that live at these extreme heights grow very fine downy hair under their tough 'guard hairs'. It is this cashmere that keeps the goats warm during the harsh winters. It is combed from the animal by their goat herders once a year. This shawl is extremely fine with a micron of 8.2 - 12 (only 1% of the worlds cashmere is this fine) and so extremely light - this shawl weighs only 160 gms.

Each piece is creating essential employment for a unique collection of a highly skilled people, that generates employment and a sustainable living in the highest and most challenging region of the world to survive. This Buddhist association has more than 300 artists who are working in Pashmina (the proper name for this rare, very fine cashmere wool) development in Ladakh and Kashmir.

At The Wool Company, our ethical policy is extremely important to us, and we cannot imagine a more wonderful way to support the growers and artists by being able to occasionally bring you these extraordinary shawls. 50% of the total profit earned by the collective is re-invested into the education and skill development of the Himalayan region, including the essential education of girls.

This shawl was photographed on our mannequin and has been very carefully treated and carefully re-packed.

The shawl will be gift packed in a sturdy gift box and wrapped in tissue paper.

If you would like to know more about these remarkable shawls, we highly recommend a book called 'The Kashmir Shawl' by Rosie Thomas. Although fictional, it is very detailed in where these shawls are made and the fascinating journey to make them.
