About The Wool Company

We moved back to Cornwall after twenty years away when we discovered we were going to be blessed with a third child. In the depths of a cold wet December we bought a rundown farmhouse and 17 acres of impenetrable weeds on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Higher Hill Farm had previously been a successful wild boar farm - a good early example of farming diversification - but had problems with escapees (there is still the occasional wild boar sighted in the woods today).  Unfortunately, after the wild boar left, most of the topsoil had gone too, leaving only very stony ground and chest-high weeds.

With no experience of farming Sarah took up the mantle to choose an appropriate animal that would help put the land back into "good heart". Having dismissed ostrich, bison, llamas, alpacas, cows and 'normal' sheep the only animals she found that could live comfortably off the land were goats - and the only breed that wouldn't jump over our fences were Angora goats, who produce the luxury fibre mohair.

It took only one winter in our freezing, draughty stone farmhouse to discover the amazing benefits of mohair on our feet. Mohair is much warmer than sheep's wool and being soft yet hardwearing it makes the perfect yarn for seriously comfortable and warm socks. The children didn't much appreciate Harry's reluctance to buy heating oil and became great fans of their "Momos", the Kid Mohair Explorer children’s socks we designed... and so The Wool Company took its first tentative steps.

We are all fanatical about natural fibres - hence our strap-line The World's Finest Fibres, which we hope really says what we are all about.  This, combined with our obsessive nature of seeking out the most wonderful products, makes for a truly excitable team. Sample products are greeted with much anticipation before being subjected to a tortuous examination, much stroking and endless comparison. We strive to deliver the very highest quality in bedding, soft furnishings and clothing that cannot readily be found elsewhere.

We love sending out products that really do make a difference to our customers' lives, that they can truly enjoy for many years, giving a true meaning to “value for money”.

Quality is key and the best in the world is our goal.  We will, however, always look locally first, before broadening our search globally for gorgeous goods made from the world's finest fibres.

We abhor plastics and anything petrochemical. We strongly believe that biodegradable, natural fibre products from sustainable sources are more healthy for us, the animals we care for and the planet and that we should simply stop using plastics where there is an alternative.

Led by Eileen our customer services team, is extraordinarily caring as well as highly knowledgeable. We will help you in every aspect of your journey with us before, during and after your purchase and will go the extra mile to ensure you are happy at the end of it.

The Business

We started The Wool Company with our own range of kid mohair socks for children and adults but soon realised there was an unmet need for high quality natural wool and luxury natural fibre products so started to develop our range. As well as serving our loyal retail customers on our web site we supply a significant number of corporate customers including global hotel chains, megayachts, castles and palaces, ski resorts, boutique hotels and shops, interior designers, breweries and even oil rigs.

We source as many of our products as we can from the UK, but some come from further afield, such as Portugal, Austria, India, Nepal, China, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Our famous sheepskins are very local; from South West England and we boast the most extensive range of quality wool blankets anywhere in the world, including many from our Yorkshire based blanket manufacturers.
