This Badamwar Jaal cashmere pashmina is a beautiful example of Sozni hand-embroidery from Kashmir. Sozni means 'cage of vine'. This pashmina is a generous size and is made from baby cashmere which is beautifully soft and embroidered with orange, red, and golden-coloured threads inspired by the Ladakh Red Fox, known as 'Watse' in the Ladakh language.
The drape and feel of this shawl are beautiful and the fabric is as light as a feather. The whole process to make this pashmina from fibre to fabric has taken just over 2 years, involving the skill and expertise of craftsmen from Kashmir using traditions handed down over generations.
Baby cashmere fibres are from the first combing of a baby goat, it is even softer and finer compared to the cashmere from an adult goat. The cashmere is collected in the summer, combed out carefully by hand from the young coats when the weather is hot.
The precious baby pashmina is then gently washed, carded, and de-haired entirely by hand. The baby soft pashmina is then spun by hand, a traditional craft in Kashmir taking a skilled and experienced craftsperson one month to spin 100 grams of pashmina yarn.
The raw pashmina wool is collected from private herds of Changthani goats which is then washed, carded, and de-haired. De-hairing is the process of removing the guard hair (thick hair) from the pashmina fibres so that only the finest hairs remain.
The baby soft pashmina is then spun by hand converting the soft fibre into an ultrafine yarn that even modern technology would struggle to achieve. Hand spinning is a traditional craft in Kashmir.
