Hand-embroidered and hand-loomed pure cashmere pashmina which is part of a classic revival series called Kaal, the shawl itself is named Samay meaning time, and is inspired by the ancient game of Snakes and Ladders.
The cashmere for this piece was sourced in June 2020 from settlements in the Rupshu area of the Zanskar mountain range from Mr Tsering Angchuk.
The raw pashmina wool is collected from private herds of Changthani goats where temperatures can reach minus 35 degrees during winter in this cold desert region of the Himalayas. The cashmere is then washed, carded, and de-haired. De-hairing is the process of removing the guard hair (thick hair) from the pashmina fibres so that only the finest hairs remain. The cashmere from this region is considered amongst the best in the world, it is combed from the chest and underbelly of the goats. and is light and warm with amazing insulating properties, the fibres are extremely fine, varying between 9 - 16 microns.
The fabric was woven by Mr Abrar Hussain R/O in Srinagar, the yarn was dyed in Hawal, Srinagar by Mr Zakir Wani R/O. The central panel of embroidery represents the squares of the ancient playboards, and has elements of the snake shape. This is a wonderful example of classic needlework carried out by hand on handwoven 'Toosh coloured' cashmere. The fabric is undyed natural brown cashmere woven in a diamond weave pattern.
Accompanying your shawl is 'The Kashmir Shawl', a book that beautifully illustrates the 'landscape and lives' that contribute to the creation of these magnificent shawls, enriching your appreciation for this artisanal work.
