Traditional Sozni hand-embroidered baby cashmere pashmina is a beautiful example of handwoven and hand-embroidered craftmanship from Kashmir. The embroidery inspiration comes from the pastures of Changthang and covers the pashmina in dainty flowers and vines of leaves in threads of pinky beige and olive green. This kind of intricate work is called Badamwar Jaal.
The raw pashmina wool is collected from private herds of Changthani goats which is then washed, carded, and de-haired. De-hairing is the process of removing the guard hair (thick hair) from the pashmina fibres so that only the finest hairs remain.
The baby soft pashmina is then spun by hand converting the soft fibre into an ultrafine yarn that even modern technology would struggle to achieve. Hand spinning is a traditional craft in Kashmir.
Baby cashmere fibres are from the first combing of a baby goat, it is even softer and finer compared to the cashmere from an adult goat. The cashmere is collected in the summer, combed out carefully by hand from the young coats when the weather is hot. The cashmere used in the creation of this shawl was sourced in 2019.
The precious baby pashmina is then gently washed, carded, and de-haired entirely by hand. The baby soft pashmina is then spun by hand, a traditional craft in Kashmir taking a skilled and experienced craftsperson one month to spin 100 grams of pashmina yarn.
The shawl is embroidered in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir, which is a mecca for handwork. This intricate style of hand embroidery normally takes between 4 to 5 months to complete.
The whole process to make this pashmina from fibre to fabric has involved the skill and expertise of craftsmen from Kashmir using traditions handed down over generations, and has taken 21 months to complete.
