Delivery & Returns

When will you receive your order?

UK orders with Courier/Express and Next Day shipping methods placed by 1 pm on weekdays are dispatched the same day, otherwise the next working day.

Orders with other shipping methods are usually dispatched just as quickly, but may take up to 3 working days to ship if we are very busy.

We don't dispatch orders at weekends (except at peak season) or on bank holidays.

We occasionally offer Free Delivery to UK addresses. When we do, we'll display it prominently on the website and at checkout. Please allow an extra day or two for delivery to offshore and remote destinations like Northern Ireland, the Highlands or Islands.

To find exact delivery options and costs, simply add items to your basket, then enter the delivery address on the next page. Shipping options are calculated based on items in the basket and the destination.

All delivery methods are tracked.

We deliver to most friendly countries not in a conflict zone. We have paused deliveries to the European Union for now.

Hassle-Free Returns

Simple! If you've made/received an online order and don't like something, simply send it back together with the order details and with a very few exceptions, and as long as we can still sell it "as new", we will be delighted to give you a refund, exchange or store credit, whichever you prefer.

Some items are non-refundable and/or non-returnable. These limitations apply: -

  • Made-to-Order Items, Special Order Items, Bespoke Items, customised and/or personalised (e.g. embroidered) items are not returnable.
  • Mattress toppers and mattresses are not returnable if the inner package has been opened and the items have been unfolded.
  • Items that are not in "new" condition, e.g. used, marked, worn, washed, soiled or damaged in any way, or items missing original tags or packaging, are not returnable.
  • Products where security or hygiene seals (where applicable) have been broken or removed are not returnable.

Other non-refundable orders include: -

  • Orders placed for our swatch services and/or gift wrap services (where available) are not refundable, except where expressly stated.
  • Sale and Bargain Section and promotional items (e.g. Discounted, BOGOF or 3 for 2 promotions) need to be returned within 14 days of dispatch date: after this, they are not refundable, but you can still return them for a store credit or exchange for up to 28 days after dispatch to you.

By "new" we mean:

  • You haven’t used the product.
  • You’ve kept all original packaging and labels in good condition and the product can be resold as new, at its full price.

This does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash the Duchess merino blanket at home?

The manufacturer, John Atkinson, advises professional cleaning only, and that is the cautious answer.

However, many of our customers have hand-washed or machine-washed these blankets for years: a cool wool setting at 30°C (or less) with a wool-approved detergent, no spin, and air drying only. Never tumble dry a merino blanket.

Never use a standard detergent on wool, even a "gentle" or "non-bio" one. Use a wool-approved detergent or a few pure soap flakes.

There will always be some shrinkage after careful washing: up to 6% initially, reducing with each subsequent wash. We size these blankets generously to allow for it.

How warm is it, and can I use it all year round?

The Duchess is a medium-weight blanket at 400 gsm, which gives year-round comfort. It is substantial enough for the cooler months and light enough to layer, so you can add or remove layers to reach your own ideal sleeping temperature rather than being fixed at one warmth.

Where is it made, and where does the wool come from?

This authentic John Atkinson by Hainsworth brand blanket is woven in Bradford, Yorkshire's historic wool capital, in one of the last remaining vertical wool mills in Englsnd — a mill that has been operating for 235 years.

The merino wool itself is sourced from New Zealand sheep and is independently certified as non-mulesed.

What sizes does it come in?

Single: 230 x 185 cm (c. 90 x 72 inches)
Double: 230 x 255 cm (c. 90 x 100 inches)
King: 255 x 280 cm (c. 100 x 110 inches)
Super-king: 280 x 305 cm (c. 110 x 120 inches)

These are generous for their names, partly to allow for the small amount of shrinkage that follows washing, a deep mattress and a good tuck-in or drape.

What colours are there, and why isn't the white a bright white?

White, Camel, Champagne (Beige), Alaskan Blue, Navy, Powder Pink and Cherry.

The White blanket is an unbleached, undyed creamy natural white, as with all high-quality wool blankets, rather than an optically brightened white.

The dyed colours use AZO-free dyes, which avoid harmful chemicals — less impact on the environment and healthier for the sleeper.

How long will it last?

Properly cared for, these blankets will last for generations and become a much cherished part of the household. Buy once and buy well.

Merino has an integrated spring-like crimp in the fibre, so the blanket keeps its loft and handle for years. Wool also sheds dust and dirt and repels odours, so it needs far less laundering than other textiles — and less washing is a large part of why a good wool blanket outlives the alternatives.

Is wool a good choice if someone in the house has asthma or allergies?

Wool naturally resists dust mites and mould, and regulates moisture, which makes it a good choice for asthma sufferers and for healthier indoor air.

It also absorbs and neutralises volatile organic compounds and other pollutants, and its natural anti-static properties mean it does not readily attract dust and dirt the way synthetic fibres do.

Does a wool blanket need a flame-retardant treatment?

No. Wool is naturally flame resistant and self-extinguishing, so unlike synthetic fibres these blankets need NO chemical flame retardants, PFAS, waterproofing, stain-proofing, or synthetic coatings (forever chemicals). Wool's natural properties make it inherently flame-resistant.

How do I know I am buying a genuine John Atkinson blanket?

Buy from an authorised stockist. Counterfeit versions of these fine blankets show up frequently on online marketplaces and discount websites, and they are not woven by John Atkinson by Hainsworth. Recommended by John Lewis, The Wool Company is the primary independent authorised retailer for John Atkinson Blankets.

    Best wool blanket

This Atkinson blanket is superb winter blanket. It is easy cleaning and provides all the warmth you will need.

Blankets are easier than duvets to maintain. This is easily the best UK 🇬🇧 homemade blanket to keep you cosy when fuel prices are so high.

    White Duchess Merino blanket

I haven’t used the blanket as yet. I already have a Duchess Merino blanket which I love, and am waiting for the colder weather to start and then will add it to my bed. Once again, thank you for a very reliable and trustworthy service.
