Picking the perfect picnic rug, made easy
Wool is perfect for making picnic rugs. We pull out our wool picnic rugs at festivals, summer camps, race days, outdoor cinema nights and fetes. There’s always one to hand in the back of the car, ready to shake out at a moment’s notice.
We’re in total agreement with the W Somerset Maugham quote: “There are few things so pleasant as a picnic eaten in perfect comfort”. So let us take you to that perfectly comfortable place.
You know that feeling of relief when you survey the shelves of a well-known German supermarket, and the choice is actually limited? And you don’t have to spend hours working out the benefits and price difference between 16 different types of mayonnaise before you plump for the one you always buy, anyway?
Well, we feel much the same about our wool picnic rug range. We’ve rigorously road tested our picnic rugs for you. It was a tough job, but someone had to do it and besides, we had a lot of strawberries to eat up!
Waterproof picnic rugs, or not?
The first decision is based on soggy bottoms. Most of our wool picnic rugs come with a nylon waterproof backing. Will you be using the blanket on potentially damp spring to autumn days? You can’t go wrong with our waterproofed backed, fold away blankets.
Are you venturing out into the hills, solo, for some meditative time at one in nature? Or perhaps you’re planning a romantic picnic à deux, in a spot draped in dappled shade under your favourite tree?
Choose one of our Small Walker Companion Tweed picnic rugs. These pack away to a petite bundle thanks to the tweed, which is much finer than pure new wool. A smart popper fastening means the rug stays neatly rolled when it’s time to pack up. You have two colour-ways to choose from - grey and charcoal or subtle olive green tweed check.
For a cosier bottom, opt for the Pure New Wool Walker Companion. This rug comes in at the same size as the tweed version but the thicker fabric provides a softer landing. Choose from classic Antique Buchanan, soft grey and pale blue Cheltenham, or vibrant white, red and blue Marine.
The Large Eventer range is a spacious blanket, still with a waterproof backing, made of pure new wool. A pocket and carrying straps mark this out as a rug with purpose. Practical, beautiful, comfortable. Available in striking red and black Royal Stuart, a subtle blend of brown, green, yellow and beige for Antique Dress Gordon or the classic white, blue and grey mix of Muted Blue Dress Stewart tartan. The Royal Stuart also comes in slightly smaller size. Both weigh around 1kg.
The most generous of our rugs are the sumptuously soft 100% merino wool Antique Buchanan picnic rug and softest lambswool Cheltenham picnic rug, which are both created with super strong 100% real leather straps, handmade in Wales.
Evening chill begone
If you anticipate that your blanket will mainly be thrown over your shoulders as the chill descends in the evening, plump for one of our magnificent backing-less rugs. These have been woven in Scotland from thick, soft and heavy double-faced lambswool, with a long fringe. Choose from our classic colour combinations of Gunclub Green, Gunclub Natural or chicest Houndstooth. Curl up with your rug and a good book in your favourite spot.
Now you just have to throw together a ‘simple’ picnic. Is there such a thing...?
