Absolutely stunning cashmere hand embroidered 'eco-toosh' pashmina, created to feel as similar to Shatoosh as possible. Shatoosh is no longer produced but the desire for softness remains so this shawl is from a range designed to try and replicate the incredible feel of Shatoosh.
The raw pashmina wool was collected from a private herd of Changthani goats owned by Mr Tsering of Koyul village in Kashmir, which was then washed, carded, and de-haired. De-hairing is the process of removing the guard hair (thick hair) from the pashmina fibres so that only the finest hairs remain. This is done by hand as machine carding would break the fibre length.
The baby soft pashmina is then spun by hand in Kashmir where hand spinning is a traditional craft, to make an incredibly fine yarn (and unbroken) ranging in thickness from 110 - 140 English count, which would not be possible on a machine without a 'carrier fibre'.
The fine yarn was then sent to Srinigar and woven by a skilled craftsman, the eco-toosh yarn is slightly more difficult to work with as the fibres are so short so the yarn is extra delicate. This particular shawl was woven by Mohd. Shabbir on a pit handloom and will have taken approximately a month to make this beautiful fabric due to the delicate nature of the yarn. The thread was dyed in Hawal Srinagar.
The embroidery was done by Javed Ahmed working in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir. Embroidered by hand in a classic Sozni style and will have taken more than 30 days to complete.
The shawl was finished at the 'finishing plant' in Hawal by Mr Zakir Wani in December 2022, where the fabric was carefully washed and finished and ready for dispatch.
The shawl will be supplied with a book entitled 'The Kashmir Shawl', which will create a backdrop for you of the 'landscape and lives' where these shawls are created.
