Incredibly soft navy pure cashmere Mayajaal pashmina sewn intricately with hand embroidery inspired by the Galaxies of the Universe. Mayajaal is actually two words, Maya meaning 'which is not there' and Jaal which means 'a net' or 'vine'. The combination of dark fabric and the bright Sozni embroidery denotes the elements of the sky.
The cashmere fibres for this shawl were sourced in June 2020 from Koyul Village in Kashmir. These Changra goats reside in the high passes of the Ladakh Plateau in Northern India. Due to the cold mountain environment, the goats have a thick underlayer to protect them, along with heavier outer hair for additional weather protection. The pashminas are made from the soft underlayer, which is carefully combed by shepherds by hand during the Spring season. This fibre is light and warm with amazing insulating properties, the fibres are extremely fine varying between 9 - 16 microns.
The baby soft cashmere was spun in Kashmir where spinning is a traditional culture, The soft fibre is converted into yarn ranging between 110-140 'English count' in thickness, this fineness of yarn would be difficult to achieve on modern machinery without a carrier fibre. The shortness of the fibres used to make the yarn for these 'toosh revival' shawls makes the shawls ultra soft but the thread is more likely to break while being woven so it is a time-consuming process to make the fabric for each of these pashminas. This piece was woven by Mohd Shabbir.
Embroidered in the Ganderbal District of Kashmir by Javed Ahmed, the hand embroidery for this shawl took more than 3 months to complete. The ecotoosh fabric is very delicate and soft making embroidery more difficult. Then finished at the finishing plant in Hawal Srinigar where it is washed and made ready by Mr Zakir Wani.
Accompanying your shawl is 'The Kashmir Shawl', a book that beautifully illustrates the 'landscape and lives' that contribute to the creation of these amazing shawls, enriching your appreciation for this artisanal work.
